The Scent of Blood and Salt
Spirits of Ho-Kai-Yo
In the old times, many elementals and gods lived side-by-side with the Ho-Kai-Ren. It was customary for each city-ship to adopt a spirit to watch over it in exchange for daily worship. These ship-spirits provided the Ho-Kai-Ren with a supernatural edge in their piracy and ensured that they would be feared as much for their seamanship as for their sorcery.
The tradition has waned much in these days, but many Ho-Kai-Ren still trace their lineage to gods and elementals. God-Bloods are extremely common in Ho-Kai-Yo.
Some Pirate-Lords hold to this tradition, however, most notably Shae-Gari herself. It is rumoured that a powerful god called Typhoon helped her defeat the Realm, and even now the spirit courts of the isles are abuzz with excitement that the Immaculate Faith could be overthrown and the old ways return.
